Ron Shafer
Ron Shafer is a 71 years young retired farmer from Texico Illinois. He is a polite
and quiet gentleman but has made some big noise with his Beretta 391 Teknys since
he began shooting sporting clays in the spring of 1999. Not wanting to be idle between
hunting seasons, he started shooting clays at Rend Lake with the help of J.W. Pulliam
and Dennis Sneed teaching him the basics. That was the beginning of his new hobby.
Ron has had a successful background in tractor pulling so he is no stranger
to competition. His first sporting clays tournament was the Illinois State Championship
at Rend Lake in 1999. Wanting to take his shooting to a higher level Ron sought some
professional instruction, set some goals, and has since attained some very impressive
accomplishments in his eight years of competitive shooting.
This 2003 Illinois State Hall of Fame inductee and member of the Illinois All State Team for 12 consecutive years has many major shooting accomplishments on his resume:
You will never know where you’ll run into Ron on the circuit. He shot over nine thousand registered targets last season visiting over 35 courses through out the United
States.
Ron’s most memorable experiences in his shooting career were taking the SVCH at the US Open and Nationals in 04 and claiming SVCH at the Nationals for the second time in 06 along with being named captain of S-V All American Team and Team USA Sporting.
Ron advises new shooters to get a good gun that is properly fitted, take some lessons from a competent instructor, set achievable goals, and have fun with the sport.
Break ‘em all, Ron! We’ll be seeing you at the State Championship in July.
